Second-hand is gaining in popularity
The annual report published by the famous Ebay sales platform "Recommerce" in 2024 revealed that the second-hand market is constantly evolving, almost exponentially among French consumers. Ebay has taken this information on board and intends to encourage all its customers to follow this trend.
In this year's report, we learn that global consumer behaviour is increasingly moving towards buying and selling second-hand products. The French are particularly keen: 66 % of them have made a purchase of this type in the last 12 months, involving a second-hand product or item. On the platform, this trend is set to continue growing: 62 % of Ebay's global customers say they save money by buying second-hand, and almost three quarters of buyers agree that buying second-hand is sustainable for our planet and nature.
But the medium- and long-term issues are very real: what about the future of certain parts that are very specific and designed for just a few machines or objects in the world? Why keep them? For what use and to whom? It would be a great shame if certain parts, finding no takers or other uses for certain machines, ended up lost in nature and forgotten. How can we manage this flow, and make it easier for people looking for (used) parts to find what they need in a more accessible way?
With a view to encouraging this mode of consumption
Ebay is marking the release of their report with a "Recommerce Day", aimed at demonstrating to their customers their commitment to the fight against overconsumption: with figures, statistics and testimonials from consumers who are already involved in this movement. This message is spread through three levers: encouraging resale, reconditioning and repair.
But Ebay has other ways of promoting this type of consumption alongside Recommerce Day. The platform offers several services to help you keep your appliance or object for as long as possible: eBay buyback and eBay repair.
Ebay Repurchase is an instant repurchase service that greatly encourages reconditioning. The service consists of estimating the price of items resold by customers on the site by asking a few questions such as "What condition is your item in? or "Is it faulty?", the answers to which will be used to determine the price. approximate the reseller may return the item to an eBay-approved reseller free of charge.
The eBay Repair service helps consumers to extend the life of their items. A year after declaring that they would no longer take part in Black Friday, eBay is offering their service to cover a range of appliances: from household appliances to high-tech, gardening equipment and various machines... Ebay Repair offers four ways to make repairs easier:
- A Chatbot can be used by any DIY enthusiast to pinpoint the source of the fault with a few simple questions
- Several tutorial videos accessible and classified by type of appliance and problem.
- A search engine to quickly find a compatible spare part from tens of thousands of options.
- And of course video troubleshooting for remote technical assistance, with experts available during the day every day.
